Joyent Buys Reasonably Smart

Sausalito, California, USA, January 14, 2009 – Joyent Inc. today announced the signing of an agreement to acquire Reasonably Smart. Reasonably Smart is an auto-scaling Platform-as-a-Service; it is a direct, open source competitor to Google App Engine.

“Joyent has experienced robust growth over the past year. Revenues from our existing infrastructure-on-demand business more than doubled during 2008″, said David Young, co-founder and CEO of Joyent. “This has put us in a strong financial position that supports making strategic acquisitions.”

“The Reasonably Smart Platform represents the next step in Cloud Computing. Joyent powers PHP, Python, Java and Ruby on Rails applications, such as LinkedIn’s Bumpersticker, that do over a billion of page views a month. Today, Joyent’s clients achieve this massive scale using sophisticated deployment architectures, which are often designed in consultation with our Scale Team.” said Rod Boothby, VP of Platform Evangelism at Joyent. “With the Reasonably Smart Platform, developers will not have to think about deployment architectures. The goal is Write-Once / Scale-Forever.”

“We’re very excited to be part of the Joyent team” said Bryan Bogensberger, co-founder and CEO of Reasonably Smart. “Joyent’s proven track record with large scale deployments and Joyent’s existing user base of tens of thousands of clients provide a tremendous catalyst for the upcoming beta launch of our platform. The combination of dynamic Infrastructure and an auto-scaling Platform moves the combined companies one major step closer to truly delivering the cloud. “

“Unlike competing Platform-as-a-Service offerings, we intend to keep this new Joyent offering completely open-source”, said Jason Hoffman, co-founder and CTO at Joyent. “You will be able to buy the service from Joyent, download it and install it on a Joyent Accelerator, or even run it on your data center. At Joyent, we continue to believe in the open, loving cloud.”

About Joyent
—————–
Joyent is a Cloud Computing vendor of ‘Infrastructure as a Service’ (IaaS). Joyent’s main product is a line of virtualized servers called Joyent Accelerators. Joyent’s clients use collections of Accelerators to power large-scale web sites and web applications. We make it possible for our clients to quickly move from an idea to a web application with millions of users – without the pain of large capital outlays and long-term vendor contracts. Joyent provides a more flexible and cost-effective alternative to buying and running your own IT infrastructure, while still providing all the security, cost stability, and enterprise-grade performance of a dedicated private data center.

Joyent was founded in 2004 with a seed investment from co-founder and CEO David Young and Pay Pal co-founder Peter Thiel. Since then, Joyent has grown organically and has been completely funded by revenue.

Joyent’s customers include LinkedIn, Major League Baseball, Gilt.com, Facebook, and over 10,000 other companies ranging from small development shops to large Fortune 500 enterprise users. Joyent powers 25% of the daily application traffic on Facebook.
