Joyent's tech costs "pennies on the dollar" compared to clouds built with tech from VMware, founder and CTO Jason Hoffman says. Hoffman left a successful career as an oncologist to start Joyent and it's really paid off. Famous angel Peter Thiel was an early investor—long before he became a Facebook billionaire. Since then, Intel has invested, as has Dell and EMC. In January, Joyent got an $85 million boost, too.
