All cloud merchants make the servers seem like a commodity. You log in, you click some buttons, and you have root on a new machine. Sure, you can add more RAM, but other than that, a box is a box, right? Ah, it's trickier than that and Joyent Cloud is the proof. The company is selling a cloud machine, based on Solaris with some virtualization layer tweaks, that runs a bit faster than the others, which we learned when we started running basic tests. Not every one of our tests ran dramatically faster, but there were enough to make an impression.
