There is pent up demand by software developers in Taiwan for scalable, high performing cloud infrastructure, yet there are no Taiwanese public clouds available for this developer community.

MiTAC selected Joyent SmartDataCenter to offer the first Taiwan-based public cloud – MiCloud.tw. Using TYAN validated hardware and software from Joyent, MiTAC offers state-of-the-art cloud computing for Taiwan developers.

Emerging Demand

MiTAC’s strong relationships with customers helped them identify the emerging need for Taiwan-based cloud services. In addition, 90% of the companies are small and medium-sized business and cannot afford to run private clouds. Also, Taiwan-based developers could not find cost-effective, scalable platforms. Historically, Taiwanese software developers had to buy their own hardware or suffer geographic latency using US-based cloud services.

Seeking A Green Cloud

MiTAC considered lower power consumption to be of utmost importance in its technology decision because power can be a significant factor in the cost of operating a cloud. With three existing businesses: IT hardware, enterprise-grade IT services and mobile communications products, and a global footprint, MiTAC is keenly interested in keeping overhead costs down and running a business that is as efficient as possible.

Although MiTAC has excellent technical in-house expertise, it made a strategic decision to obtain a field-proven cloud platform that could provision new customers on demand. MiTAC also sought cloud technology with the best scalability, security, and reliability. They wanted cloud technology that they could depend on to run a profitable business and that would instill confidence amongst their customers.

A Full Solution

Continuing MiTAC’s focus on comprehensive integrated services, MiTAC has also put select models of TYAN servers through the Joyent validation process. Combining Joyent SmartDataCenter software with TYAN validated hardware, MiTAC can offer a full cloud solution to enterprises and service providers

Serving New Markets

MiTAC sees great potential in cloud computing services. MiCloud will make a significant contribution toward helping Taiwan expand from being a manufacturing hub to becoming a software development center.

Initially, MiTAC will leverage Joyent SmartDataCenter in four ways. MiTAC will

• Provide public cloud services via its MiCloud to enterprises and small and medium sized businesses.
• MiCloud will run a private cloud to manage IT projects for clients in the government, public transportation, education, health care, gaming and ecommerce sectors.
• Make SmartDataCenter available to other service providers wishing to deliver public cloud services to their customers.
• Offer Joyent validated hardware to run clouds through TYAN, their hardware subsidiary.
