The Joyent Academic Program makes Joyent’s modern infrastructure software available to qualified academic and research institutions worldwide at no cost. Made up of Joyent SmartDataCenter and existing infrastructure designs, academic and research institutions have access to the most scalable, predictable performance and flexible software available for intensive research projects. Qualified organizations may use these tools in research and in unrestricted commercial offerings targeting academic and research communities. This Program is offered to qualified academic institutions worldwide.

As a participating organization in the Joyent Academic Program, core computing academic and research institutions will receive training and assistance in becoming system integrators so that they may perform free SmartDataCenter implementations for their “customers”.

About Joyent

Joyent is an infrastructure system software company whose core offering is SmartDataCenter, a cloud management solution. Joyent also operates one of the largest public on-demand computing environments, the Joyent Cloud.

See Joyent’s White Paper: Joyent SmartDataCenter. Cloud Software for Service Providers.

About SmartDataCenter

Joyent SmartDataCenter, Joyent’s core software offering, is a cloud management tool that includes SmartOS , Node.js, and Cloud Analytics.

SmartOS is an open source project sponsored by Joyent consisting of a comprehensive, secure environment that combines best of breed technologies that deliver complete hardware and operating system virtualization, enterprise grade storage, and analytics.

Node.js is the open source server-side JavaScript development environment and runtime that supports the building of data-intensive, dynamic real-time applications that require massive scale.

Joyent Cloud Analytics rapidly identify and isolate cloud resource or application trouble spots anywhere in the stack so users can act immediately to resolve the problem.

Joyent Academic Program Details

  • Joyent will make SmartDataCenter and its infrastructure designs freely available to qualified academic and research organizations.
  • Joyent will allow these academic computing environments to be used for unrestricted commercial offerings targeting the academic and research communities. For example, a core computing facility can chargeback to principal investigators for this IaaS offering.
  • Joyent will also allow VARs wholesale access to Joyent’s IaaS offering so that core computing facilities can resell compute capacity to their customers.
  • Joyent will encourage and make it possible to do complete integration work for these types of hybrid environments.
  • Joyent will train and assist core computing facilities to become system integrators and perform free SmartDataCenter implementations for their customers.
  • Joyent will offer teaching grants for courses and course development that use SmartOS, Node.js and SmartDataCenter. Particular interest will be given in OS, instrumentation and “empirical” computer science programs.
  • Joyent will offer research grants and funded student and post-doc positions that use SmartOS, Node.js and SmartDataCenter. Particular interest will be given in the following areas:
    • “empirical” computer science
    • Instrumentation
    • telemetry and data harvesting
    • data mining
    • SML
    • workload analysis and metrics
    • algorithm refinement and development
    • data governance and security

Grants

Joyent will offer Teaching grants for courses and course development that use SmartOS, Node.js, and SmartDataCenter, with particular interest in operating system, instrumentation, and “empirical” computer science programs.
