What is the Joyent Academic Program?
The Joyent Academic Program provides a series of programs that enables the academic community with cloud computing technology, SmartDataCenter, for teaching and research. By joining the Joyent Academic Program, participants use Joyent’s SmartDataCenter to create, and potentially resell, a cloud computing environment. With this environment in place, participants may use this on-demand resource for research endeavors, teaching advanced courses, curriculum development, exploring new projects, and other use cases deemed pertinent to academic advancement.
Who may participate in the Joyent Academic Program?
Any accredited public or private institution of higher learning that provides teaching and research and is authorized to grant degrees. Any qualified academic institution may apply.
What is included in the Joyent Academic Program?
Joyent Software (via download): SmartDataCenter to be installed on a specified number of servers. The institution may use the Joyent software to provide cloud computing services to third parties, and resell cloud computing services.
What is not included in the Joyent Academic Program?
Onsite Professional Services: Installation and setup (configuration).
Use of the Cloud Service: i.e. JoyentCloud.com
Should these services be needed or desired, the Master Services Agreement for Academic Institutions will define the Terms and Conditions of the use of these services by Joyent.
How will I get support?
Academic institutions accepted into the Joyent Academic Program may receive support through Joyent’s online ticketing system, smartsupport@joyent.com. In addition, there are knowledgebases available for self help at http://www.joyent.com/resources/.
Is this a global program?
Yes. Joyent Academic Program will accept applications from around the globe.
What types of grants are available?
Joyent Academic Program is offering grants for educators, academic researchers, and students.
What is the Term of the Program?
The initial term of the program is one year.
Can I renew the Term?
Yes, the initial term is one year, and will automatically renew for additional one-year periods, unless terminated by either Joyent or the participating institution.
Tell me about the Grants for Teachers?
Joyent will offer teaching grants for courses and course development that use SmartOS, Node.js, and SmartDataCenter, with particular interest in operating system, instrumentation, and “empirical” computer science programs. To find out more about Grants, please email education@joyent.com.
What about Grants for Researchers, Students and Post-Doc positions?
Joyent will offer research grants and funded student and Post-Doc positions that use SmartOS, Node.js, and SmartDataCenter. In particular, areas around “empirical” computer science, instrumentation, telemetry and data harvesting, data mining, SML, workload analysis and metrics, algorithm refinement and development, and data governance and security.
