Former Sun Microsystems Distinguished Engineer Takes on Cloud OS Innovation as the Latest Addition to Joyent’s Growing Team

SAN FRANCISCO, July 28 /PRNewswire/ — Joyent, a leading global provider of cloud computing solutions, today named Bryan Cantrill as VP of Engineering. Cantrill will be responsible for overseeing worldwide development focused on operating systems, including building additional innovation into Joyent’s SmartOS and SmartDataCenter.

For Joyent, the addition of Cantrill, an engineer named as one of the top 35 technologists under the age of 35 by MIT’s Technology Review and an Innovator of the Year by InfoWorld, represents the next step in continuing to building out a team of world-renowned engineering talent.

Prior to joining the Joyent team, Cantrill served as Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems, where he spent more than a decade working on system software, from the guts of the kernel to client-code on the browser and much in between. Most notably, Cantrill co-designed and implemented DTrace, a facility for dynamic instrumentation of production systems that won the Wall Street Journal’s top Technology Innovation Award in 2006 and the USENIX Software Tools User Group Award in 2008.

Recently Bryan co-founded the Fishworks group at Sun, where he designed and implemented the DTrace-based analytics facility found in the Sun Storage 7000 series of appliances—a facility that InfoWorld described as “stunning” in a February 2009 review.

“As one of the world’s foremost experts in system software and application monitoring, Bryan will be one of the cornerstones of the team we’ve been building here at Joyent,” said Joyent CEO David Young. “His work on DTrace and his insight into how applications run on the SmartOS will give us a huge boost in the innovations we expect to bring to the table over the next few years and beyond.”

“The tech world is shifting, the definition of the operating system is expanding and the data center is rapidly becoming the computer. Amidst a slew of cloud companies, Joyent is one of the few focusing on innovation up and down the stack to deliver a true cloud operating system,” said Cantrill. “Joyent has a deep sense of systems innovation and is well positioned to develop the breakthroughs needed to deliver the full potential of cloud computing.”

About Joyent

Joyent is the premier Infrastructure-as-a-Service (Iaas) and Platform-as-a-Service (Paas) provider offering cloud computing solutions worldwide since 2004. Delivering billions of page views per month, Joyent’s Smart Technologies improve performance, scalability, manageability and security for thousands of web and mobile applications. Serving a network of service providers and thousands of customers, Joyent is the only company that runs a major public cloud infrastructure, builds the technologies that power that infrastructure, and uses those technologies to enable multiple third-party public, private, and hybrid clouds.

Updated July 22, 2010: A recording of the webinar can be found here. We hope you enjoy it.

Businesses that fully exploit the new opportunities the cloud presents to enhance the performance and scale of applications will be able to improve employee productivity, increase bottom line profits, and grow their customer base. But success isn’t guaranteed. As companies move from premises-based data centers to private and public cloud computing infrastructure, they need to carefully consider the architecture of their applications and data to make a safe and smooth transition.

Some of the most important considerations to obtain performance and scale in the cloud include:

Making certain that application performance is optimized when written for deployment on the cloud

Planning how to most efficiently scale horizontally and vertically to meet their future capacity and performance demands

Avoiding replication of complex, existing data center infrastructures in the cloud

In this interactive webinar, Joyent’s Chief Scientist Jason Hoffman will discuss how businesses can avoid common pitfalls in their transition to the cloud through smart application development and by ensuring that their cloud vendor provides dynamic scalability and performance. Attendees are invited to read the Joyent White Paper “Performance and Scale in Cloud Computing” before the event and bring your questions or comments with you.

San Francisco, CA July 15, 2010—Joyent, a leading global provider of cloud computing solutions, announced today that it has acquired Vancouver-based Layerboom Systems, a leading provider of software virtual server management tools for hosting providers and enterprise companies.

The acquisition will enable Joyent to offer expanded cloud infrastructure services to customers by adding new virtualization technology for Windows and Linux operating systems. Joyent customers will be the only cloud computing users able to enjoy the benefits of both the cloud-optimized Joyent SmartOS and legacy Windows and Linux platforms in their application architectures.

The acquisition marks the third such major deal in the past few years as Joyent actively transforms its unique smart computing solutions into the most comprehensive infrastructure-as-a-service and platform-as-a-service offering on the market.

“Joyent already offers customers the widest range of integrated Smart Technologies to support high-performance and reliable cloud computing,” said Joyent CEO David Young. “With Layerboom’s capabilities on our team, we are able to offer a broader technology portfolio and continue to drive the development of increasingly sophisticated cloud-based application architectures.”

Layerboom’s dynamic, open-source virtual server cloud management solutions provide a powerful multi-tenant administration system that enables flexibility and agility in managing virtual private server cloud build out and maintenance. Layerboom’s technologies are designed to be easy to deploy and manage, allowing IT professionals the freedom to attend to more business-critical functions.

“By joining forces with Joyent, Layerboom technology will become seamlessly incorporated into one of the leading cloud technology providers,” said Howie Wu, CEO of Layerboom. “This will allow us to provide Joyent customers with a broader range of solutions across a wider swathe of industries supported by Joyent’s Smart Technology.“

Public Cloud Innovator Continues Global Expansion to Make Cloud Solutions More Accessible

San Francisco, CA (JUNE 17, 2010)–Joyent, a leading global provider of <a href=http://www.joyent.com/">cloud computing solutions, announced today that Philippe Weppe has joined the company to serve as president of Joyent’s European, Middle Eastern and African operations. The move comes as part of the company’s global expansion strategy to provide greater access to cloud computing solutions.

Weppe, a 25-year industry veteran, has held various leadership roles in sales, marketing channel/alliances and services in France and throughout Europe, including roles as vice president EMEA Channel and MidMarket for Sun Microsystems and COO of NextiraOne. Most recently, Weppe served as CEO of Risc Group, a pan-European services provider, specializing in performance, security and availability of data for small- and medium-size businesses and enterprises. Weppe holds an Electronic and Telecom Engineering degree from INSA Lyon-France.

“We are very pleased to have Philippe onboard and look forward to leveraging his expertise to expand access to our reliable, high-performance cloud computing solutions,” said Joyent CEO David Young. “Thanks to his depth of experience in working with telco and network infrastructure providers, Philippe definitely has his finger on the pulse with regard to the need for access to the kind of high-performance and reliable service Joyent can provide.”

Already about 20 percent of Joyent’s customer base is located in Europe. The addition of a physical presence in close geographic proximity will ensure that the company’s European-based hosting, telco and systems integration customers will have access to the support they need to provide timely and efficient service to their customers. With ready access to resources and infrastructure, Joyent will be able to improve systems setup, latency and application response for its European customer base.

“As part of our aggressive new strategy, we aim to begin work immediately on the development of a European public cloud designed specifically for applications software and online game developers,” Weppe said. “I look forward to demonstrating how Joyent’s proven technologies can provide scalable, reliable and cost-effective access to public, private and hybrid infrastructure solutions for enterprises throughout the continent.”

Joyent has been in operation in the U.S. since 2004 and expanded its operations into China in November 2009. For more information about Joyent’s unique stack of enterprise-class Smart Technologies for cloud computing, visit www.joyent.com.

We’re kicking off a new series of webcasts for this summer that will cover the latest developments in the cloud.

First up: a challenge to the status quo in cloud computing today. Joyent CEO David Young asks the question, “Is the cloud broken?”

Dave will discuss how cloud computing as it is understood today is inefficient and old-fashioned. You’ll learn how cloud computing can be smart computing, based on the premise that smart computing doesn’t begin by placing the same old operating system in the cloud. Rather than virtualize the OS, Dave argues, cloud computing should simply involve virtualizing applications to improve application performance, solve capacity problems and reduce costs.

We hope you’ll join us on Thursday, June 3 at 1 pm PDT to learn more about turning cloud computing into smart computing.

Just register here.

We hope to see you there.

Update June 21, 2010: Here’s a recording of the webcast in case you missed it.
