SmartMachines are what virtual machines would be if they were optimized for software applications, instead of being designed to replicate hardware. The virtual private servers are lightweight and provide greater transparency of execution of Joyent SmartOS. While Joyent SmartOS can provide both virtual machines and SmartMachines, we generally recommend SmartMachines for most applications.
