CareersHelp Build the Open Cloud

Sr. Product Engineer: Kubernetes

San Francisco, CA, US
On-site Preferred

Since its inception, over ten years ago, Joyent has lived on the leading edge of technical innovation. The Joyent team pioneered public cloud computing (and hybrid cloud), nurtured and grew Node.js into a de facto standard for web, mobile and IoT architectures, and was among the first to embrace and industrialize containers, compute-centric object storage, and what is now coming to be known as serverless computing. Common to everything we do is a deep belief in open source and open source communities. Looking forward, we believe that containerization will transform the way software is developed and deployed and will be driver of innovation in machine learning systems, serverless architectures, and more. If you are excited by the challenge of attacking big, complex, web infrastructure problems and share our passion for containers and open source software, we would love to talk.

About the Role

Kubernetes is emerging as the de-facto open source standard for container orchestration which promises to provide a cloud agnostic compute platform to enable portability and avoid vendor lock-in. To turn this “promise” into reality, an open cloud architecture powered by Kubernetes needs to be developed which effectively provides cross-cloud networking, security, federation and operations tooling.

At Joyent, we are working with the Kubernetes community to build a truly multi-cloud, open source solution that seamlessly supports movement of containers and workloads between public, private, and hybrid clouds. It is being designed to support stateful, stateless and even machine learning apps with option to switch between regular and accelerated compute resources (GPGPU, FPGA, etc).

In this role you will :

  • Work on scalability and reliability, building horizontally scalable microservices.
  • Wear multiple hats, including architect, developer, tester, and operator.
  • Listen to customers and community discussions and help define and align technology choices, designs, and policy
  • Build and operate our state of the art solution which consists of Docker/Kubernetes/Rancher/Terraform working on AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, Triton, VMWare and bare metal
  • Write great quality code fully covered by unit and integration tests, built into CI/CD pipelines. Languages we like to use are Python, GoLang, Node.js and Java.
  • Deploy and manage new technologies from the Kubernetes / CNCF ecosystem (CNI, Envoy, Fluentd, CSI, Service Mesh, Calico, Istio, etc.)
  • Develop highly scalable tools used to package applications into Docker containers
  • Maintain the platform’s documentation and help improve already established processes
  • Last, but not least, you need to be able to evangelize your product in the community and the marketplace through demos, meetups, whitepapers, webinars, screencasts, etc.

About you

First and foremost, you have a positive attitude & aptitude to learn and execute quickly. You get things done and done well. You have:

  • 8+ years of experience building distributed systems
  • Good knowledge of, and a strong interest in, orchestration platforms like Kubernetes,Swarm or Mesos.
  • Experience with virtualization and container technologies like VMware, Docker, CoreOS, SmartOS etc.
  • Good knowledge of tool chains such as Jenkins, Terraform, Vault, Consul, Etcd, etc.
  • Excellent programming skills in one of the following: GoLang, Node.js, Python or Java/Scala.
  • Experience writing simple, readable, useful scripts , especially for operational tooling (Go is a plus)
  • Knowledge or strong interest in the following: API Gateways, Fluentd, GRPC, Notary, Service Mesh, Calico, Envoy, CoreDNS, etc.
  • Familiarity with Cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Openshift, CloudFoundry, or Joyent’s Triton
  • Experience creating enterprise products from scratch, at scale
  • Deep understanding of Agile and Continuous Delivery concepts and tools
  • Experience working with a production environment with zero or very minimal downtime
  • Technical undergraduate degree
  • Willing to travel up to 10%
