The Open Academic Environment is one of the projects under the Apereo Foundation umbrella. The Apereo Foundation was formed by the merger of Jasig and the Sakai Foundation, and is a pioneer in the production and adoption of open source software for higher education. Apereo provides assistance and facilitation to educational organizations which collaborate to foster, develop, and sustain open technologies and innovation to support learning, teaching, and research.

It is a multi-tenant and highly scalable platform that is able to support multiple institutions at the same time. Apereo OAE is design led and undertakes lots of user research and usability testing. It is widely recognized for its simple and intuitive User Interface.
