Just released last Thursday, UFC Undisputed Fight Nation from THQ is a way to indulge your lust for octagonal glory while hanging out on Facebook -- providing yet another way to get your Ultimate Fighting Championship league fix when you're not playing UFC Undisputed 2010 on your XBox, PS3, PSP, iPhone or iPad.
It's easy to get started -- it wasn't five minutes after signing up that Sally "Pseudonym" smacked me with the loser stick in my first fight. Which meant that I should have probably spent more experience training my character, "Hitty McGee," by improving his kickboxing moves under the tutelage of UFC President Dana White.
The gameplay basically sets you up as a new UFC fighter working their way up the ranks. You can spend your Credits and UFC Points on training equipment and energy to improve your character, or on boosts to your health and stamina for fighting.
In the octagon, the action unfolds much like a tabletop card game, with moves being chosen randomly for each of five turns over three rounds. Run out of stamina, and you'll be "gassed" and miss every time. Run out of health, and, well, you'll be down for the count.
The strategy is in training your moves and selecting the right ones to bring to the match -- a kickboxer will want escape moves against a wrestler's holds, for instance, while a wrestler will want to have a powerful takedown to bring faster fighters down to their level on the mat.
Progress comes pretty quickly, at least early on. I managed to get from level one to level four in about half an hour. In the process, I managed to win four, lose two and draw one match. One of the wins came against one of my Facebook friends, meaning that the virtual fighting could inspire some actual trash talking next time I run into him.
Eventually, you can even progress to fighting actual pros like current UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar or Middleweight Champion Anderson da Silva. Along the way, it's a quick way to kill a few minutes while earning some bragging rights against your fellow UFC enthusiast friends without actually having to risk your precious anterior cruciate ligaments.
